Judy Haling – Judi’s Studio, Orange NSW Australia
Judy Haling nee Hudson, was born in Grenfell NSW, in the 50's and clearly remembers the delight of opening beautifully made clothes and knits from her Grandmother in Sydney. It was post war and not much was available. This started a lifelong passion for sewing clothes always with the aim of a professional finish and using beautiful fabrics. Her training at East Sydney School of Fashion, majoring in patternmaking, millinery and fashion sewing, was incredibly comprehensive, and second to none in preparation for any job in the industry.
Marriage and a move to Orange, NSW, and the birth of three bouncing boys left her little time for a career but somehow she fitted in work with Justknits and designing and supplying the first baby carriers for the Childbirth Education Association. Working then with NSW TAFE, which was to span 18 years, gave her the opportunity to explore and train in Colour and Style, a great help to students and women in general. Winning the NSW and Australian Industry Enterprise in 1988 with a ‘pre-cut childrens wear package idea for export’ gave her the opportunity to travel to the USA and a trip inspired by the Palmer/Pletsch approach to sewing and workshops.
Judi's Sewing School started in 1990 with years of travel through western NSW teaching much needed overlocking workshops. A new Studio was built as an addition to her home so regular classes in Fashion Sewing, Tailoring, Smart Sewing and Overlocking, were and are still operating, in great surroundings. Judy has been a contributor for Australian Stitches magazine, conducts 'After School Sew classes' for teens, and continues to offer 'Colour and Style' consultations especially for bridal designs. Her range of Judi's Studio Sew and Tailoring products were developed from ideas seen during that USA trip.
So today, a grannie and 18 years of Judi's Studio now selling Tailoring and pressing equipment around the globe through her website, Judy shows no signs of diminished passion for keeping sewing alive!
