Jill Bradshaw

Jill Bradshaw

You can sew your own beautiful bras and lingerie
– the BOOBY TRAPS WAY

Jill Bradshaw established Booby Traps 25 years ago to enable women everywhere to make their own bras and she caters to all their very special needs. Jill says, “Women today often have special needs due to medical problems or because of special sizing requirements. We cater to these needs. We are very concerned with getting a perfect fit and ensuring comfort”.

Jill has sewn and taught stretch sewing for many years. A trained teacher herself, she now trains other teachers and runs workshops throughout the UK, New Zealand and Australia in her one true passion, bra making and corsetry. She has put her ideas, skills and experience to work designing patterns for exclusive bras and lingerie and is also able to pass on her knowledge through her information packed instructional video/DVD. The video/DVD shows all you need to know to launch into this exciting sewing area, from how to measure your correct bra size, full cutting and sewing step-by-steps and fine turning fit information, right through to making the rest of your lingerie needs. To go with the patterns and instructions Jill has made it a lifetime commitment to gather everything you need, in professionally coordinated colour ranges that supply everything from matching fabrics and laces right through to the little flower or bow at center front.

Booby traps sells each component separately or as pre-packaged kits. The kits come in an array of beautiful fabrics, laces and accessories. They are easy to use, affordable and most importantly – FUN!

Jill’s last word on the matter is “Every woman should enjoy the achievement of sewing and the comfort of wearing their own Booby Traps creation”.

Jill Bradshaw will be leading us through the processes of making beautiful lingerie as a special contributor to Sew Inspirational.

Judi Haling

Judy Haling

Judi’s Studio, Orange NSW Australia

Judy Haling nee Hudson, was born in Grenfell NSW, in the 50's and clearly remembers the delight of opening beautifully made clothes and knits from her Grandmother in Sydney. It was post war and not much was available. This started a lifelong passion for sewing clothes always with the aim of a professional finish and using beautiful fabrics. Her training at East Sydney School of Fashion, majoring in patternmaking, millinery and fashion sewing, was incredibly comprehensive, and second to none in preparation for any job in the industry.

Marriage and a move to Orange, NSW, and the birth of three bouncing boys left her little time for a career but somehow she fitted in work with Justknits and designing and supplying the first baby carriers for the Childbirth Education Association. Working then with NSW TAFE, which was to span 18 years, gave her the opportunity to explore and train in Colour and Style, a great help to students and women in general. Winning the NSW and Australian Industry Enterprise in 1988 with a ‘pre-cut childrens wear package idea for export’ gave her the opportunity to travel to the USA and a trip inspired by the Palmer/Pletsch approach to sewing and workshops.

Judi's Sewing School started in 1990 with years of travel through western NSW teaching much needed overlocking workshops. A new Studio was built as an addition to her home so regular classes in Fashion Sewing, Tailoring, Smart Sewing and Overlocking, were and are still operating, in great surroundings. Judy has been a contributor for Australian Stitches magazine, conducts 'After School Sew classes' for teens, and continues to offer 'Colour and Style' consultations especially for bridal designs. Her range of Judi's Studio Sew and Tailoring products were developed from ideas seen during that USA trip.

So today, a grannie and 18 years of Judi's Studio now selling Tailoring and pressing equipment around the globe through her website, Judy shows no signs of diminished passion for keeping sewing alive!

Carolyn SullivanCarolyn Sullivan

Carolyn lives in Bundanoon, a rural township two hours out of Sydney, with her husband, Ken, and her cat, Orlando. Her much-loved children live elsewhere and this has given her the freedom to explore the world around her. She lives on five acres of flat, plateau country surrounded by eucalypt and deciduous trees in a park like site. Its cool climate, with its many gardens, closeness to the escarpment and beautiful mists, provide lots of inspi-ration for her work, which in recent years involves closely stitched hand work with antique silk and table linen.

Her work is exhibited all over Australia and is in collections in Australia and the United States. Her work on various committees, as president of both The Quilters’ Guild NSW and Ozquilt Network, and with the Quilts 2000 project, have given her an insight into the wider picture of the Australian quilting world. It has also meant many enduring friendships with quilters all over the country.

Carolyn is a trained high school teacher who enjoys teaching people to find their own creativity and to produce stitched works that are meaning-ful to the maker. She has travelled throughout her state of New South Wales to meet many interested students. In recent years, she has gained a Diploma in Art History from Sydney University which has encouraged her to share her knowledge and relate it to good design and conceptual thinking.

Keeping scrapbooks of her designs and thought processes is an important part of her life. These many scrapbooks are a key source of inspiration as they reference all the things she has seen and read about and all the places she has visited. By returning to them frequently, she finds ideas for design and colour for new work. She is also a frequent visitor to galleries to see how other artists are interpreting their world.

To promote her first book, Companion Pieces, Carolyn was a tutor at the International Quilt Festival in 1998. In Quilted Once Block Marvels, she further explores the ideas begun in Companion Pieces – making dynamic quilts from simple blocks created with a few lines as she repeats, rotates and reflects these blocks.
