Prints Charming Designer Cushions

This month we continue our series of great accessories and Home Decorating projects made from a uniquely Australian range of designer fabrics: Prints Charming.

Though cushions vary greatly in size and shape, there are basically only two types, knife-edge and box-edge so follow our simple step-by-step instructions for designer cushions, pick a fabulous fabric and change the look of your home this summer.

TAKING MEASUREMENTS

Knife-edge cushions: Diagram 1
If rectangular - measure the length and width and add seam allowances to all edges.

If shaped – simply draw the desired shape (i.e. flower or heart) onto pattern paper and add seam allowances to all edges.

Box-edge cushions: Diagram 2
Measure length, width, height, then around the circumference of the filler form for the length of the side walls. Add seam allowances to all edges.

PIPED KNIFE-EDGE CUSHION COVER WITH ZIPPER

  1. Cover piping cord or use ready-made covered cord. Pin piping to right side of cover top, along the seamline. Clip into the seam allowances of the piping at corners. Stitch the piping in place, taking two or three stitches diagonally across each corner to slightly round them.
  2. On the wrong side of the cover top, mark top and bottom of the zipper opening and with right sides together, stitch the cover top to the cover bottom, above and below the marks. Start at each marking and stitch to each corner’s seamline.
  3. Extend the zipper opening of the top section. Open the zipper and place half of it face down on the seam allowance, with the teeth along the piping and top and bottom stops at the top and bottom of the opening. Stitch in place, very close to the zipper teeth.
  4. Close the zipper: Stitch a bar tack across the zipper tapes at the top. Spread open the cover sections and the placket seam. From the right side, stitch the free zipper tape to the bottom cover. Stitch across the ends and along the side of the zipper. Open the zipper, to turn the cover through at a later stage.
  5. With right sides together, stitch the cover top to the bottom, beginning and ending at either end of the zipper opening. Sew across the corners to slightly round them and trim the seams. Neaten the seam allowances by machine or overlocker.

PIPED BOX-EDGE CUSHION COVERS

  1. To add a zipper opening to the side wall of the box cushion cover, cut one side of the side-wall box strip – the length of one cushion side plus two seam allowances, by the height of the cushion plus four seam allowances. Insert the zipper, along the lengthwise centre, with a double lapped insertion. Seam the boxing strip wall as shown in the diagram.
  2. If piping the cushion, sew the covered piping to the top and bottom seamlines of the box wall. Position the piping to the right side of the wall with the raw edges together. Clip into the piping seam allowances at each corner.
  3. With right sides together and the box wall side up, stitch the bottom section to the bottom seamline of the box wall. Stitch just inside the piping stitching. Spread the wall seam allowances open at each corner and stitch across each corner to slightly round them.
  4. Open the zipper, to turn through later. With right sides together and the wall side up, sew the top section to the top seam allowance of the box wall (follow step 3). Trim and neaten seams with an overcast stitch on the machine or the overlocker. Turn the cover right sides out and push the corners into shape.
